Blind date leads to love for 86-year-old Saskatoon newlyweds

Most 86-year-olds would be planning a cruise, not a honeymoon, but that’s what Brian and Madeleine Bowyer are doing after getting hitched at Fred Mitchell Memorial Park in Saskatoon over the weekend.

“It’s been a great day. A long day,” chuckled Brian on Saturday.

The elderly couple met on a blind date two years ago and quickly fell in love.
 
Brian’s daughter-in-law was responsible for the courtship, who suggested he met her aunt who recently became widowed.
 
A widower himself, Brian said he knew he didn’t want to live alone for the rest of his life and was willing to take a chance at finding love again.
 
The rest, as they say, is history.

“We fell in love. We found that we had so many things in common that we enjoyed. That’s it really,” Brian said.
 
A love for music was one of those things that brought the pair together. Brian and Madeleine are both musicians, and the new groom still plays in two bands.
 
“I’m a singer and he’s player. What a good combination,” Madeleine said.
 
When asked why they decided to tie the knot instead of staying common law, the couple said it just felt good.
 
“We’re from the old school. We still believe in marriage and a ring,” Madeleine said.

While they celebrated their union with each others families, they joked definitely no more kids are in the works.
