I continue to have to remind myself that as much as Brad Marchand can be a rat, dirty, arrogant, petulant and cheap, he is incredibly skilled and in some weird way could be argued is good for the game.
I’m a proponent that sports is more than the game. It’s entertainment, after all, and the more entertaining the better. While I’d rather Marchand entertain in other ways, every good story needs an antagonist or villain.
Marchand fits the bill.
Where would we be without villians? Games are better when fans have a little bit of hate or when players evoke any kind of emotion.
There is no doubt Marchand does that.
Think about Henry Burris against the Riders, or Jon Cornish or Bo Levi Mitchell. When fans have a stronger opinion of a player, the more engaged they are.
While the league doesn’t want Marchand licking players or giving one-word answers to the media, he is a household name.
He’s the ultimate example of any news is good news and I’m sure he’s not done making headlines in these playoffs.
