What position needs the biggest upgrade for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2019? Ask that to 10 different Rider fans, and you may get 10 different answers.
I would say running back. Time will tell, but I would also say the Riders have addressed that need with the acquisition of William Powell.
Last season, the Roughriders scored 14 touchdowns either from special teams or defence. The team’s eight pick-sixes broke a 12-year-old league record.
Let’s be honest: A team can’t count on that many touchdowns from returns, fumble recoveries and interceptions in a season. This is an offence that will have to put up more scores. I, like many others I’ve talked to, feel that Zach Collaros alone will only take the Roughriders so far. An improved run game will be crucial.
Enter the 31-year-old Powell, who had a career-high 1,362 yards in 2018. Another 1,000-yard season from Powell is a must if the Riders hope to host a playoff game in 2019.
