The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public to hold off on cooking one brand of frozen chicken strips sitting in its freezers.
The food agency is recalling Compliments brand uncooked, frozen breaded chicken strips over a possible salmonella contamination.
After doing an investigation of what it calls “an outbreak of human illness,” the agency identified the chicken strips as a source.
In an emailed news release, there weren’t any details about where in the country the outbreak happened or how many people it’s affecting.
The news release said that the chicken strips were sold nationally until May 1.
Compliments brand food items are sold in Safeway and Sobeys grocery stores in Saskatchewan.
The food agency advised people to check for the recalled chicken strips, and if they have them, to throw them out or return them to the store where they were bought.
It also warned that “food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.”
For healthy people who’ve been exposed to salmonella, short-term symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea; long-term complications may include severe arthritis, the agency said.
