Slurp!
Can you hear that sucking sound? That’s the sound of the NFL trying to suck dry the football fans around Winnipeg. It almost happened in Saskatchewan, but fortunately the plans fell apart to hold an exhibition game in Regina.
The Green Bay Packers and their carpet-bagging opponents, the Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas, were looking for suckers willing to buy overpriced tickets and bow to their every wish for a meaningless game in August.
Saskatchewan looked to be an easy mark, partly because of how the province supports its CFL team, the Roughriders. Mosaic Stadium had been reserved and people were speculating on ticket prices when the Roughriders let it be known they weren’t supporting the event, primarily because it conflicted with one of their CFL games. So the NFL game fell through, only to be scooped up by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
On Aug. 22, the Packers and Raiders have scheduled a meaningless game in Winnipeg that will reportedly cost ticket-buyers an average of $200 apiece. Prices were set by the NFL, which never misses an opportunity to suck everything it can from a community.
