Two men led police on an eventful car chase that ended with a tire coming off the vehicle after it went over a spike belt near Wynyard on Monday.
The RCMP said it was conducting patrols in the community when an officer noticed two people inside a vehicle acting suspicious. The officer checked on the plates and determined the vehicle had been stolen in Ontario.
The officer followed the vehicle onto Highway 16, where he pulled it over. When the officer approached the vehicle, it sped off into town. The RCMP said the suspects were driving at more than 100 kilometres per hour in a 40 km/h zone, so the officer chose to end the pursuit.
After the suspect vehicle left Wynyard, officers were able to contain it. A spike belt was used, but the suspects refused to stop after driving over it.
Eventually the front driver’s side tire came off the rim and the vehicle stopped six kilometres west of Wynyard.
Two 23-year-old men were arrested and face multiple charges. They appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court on Tuesday.
