On the heels of several high profile police shootings in the U.S. of late, we’re just now hearing that a RCMP officer was shot at in Saskatchewan this week.
On the evening of July 20th, at about 8:40, a minivan fled north of Regina during an investigation by Regina Police. RCMP were advised there was a firearm in the van. RCMP from five detachments responded.
About an hour later, near Punnichy, RCMP came upon the van, as well as a man and a woman fighting with a 65 year old man. It appeared they were trying to steal his vehicle. They had a long barreled firearm but no shots were fired. When RCMP showed up, the two fled in the van down highway 15. Moments later a shot was fired at the RCMP vehicle. They were pulled over a bit later without incident.
RCMP say none of their officers were injured and they didn’t fire any shots in return.
24 year old Keli William Stonechild faces 11 charges, including attempted murder and robbery.32 year old Kristin Marie Lerat is charged with eight counts, including attempted murder and robbery.
Stonechild and Lerat make their first appearance in Regina Provincial Court July 25th.
There’s no indication why it took a day and a half for RCMP to inform the public of a member being fired upon.
