What has been a running joke is now becoming sad and less funny by the day.
The Montreal Alouettes have been the punchline for some time now. Just five seasons removed from Anthony Calvillo’s retirement when they were the belle of the ball, they’re now the league’s mess that it would love to just hide rather than have people gawk at.
They haven’t found a quarterback since Calvillo was knocked out by Ricky Foley in 2013. They’ve tried Dan Hawkins, Jacques Chapdelaine, Tom Higgins and Mike Sherman as head coaches. Jim Popp even tried to give it a go on two separate occasions. Kavis Reed gave himself the job as well, after firing Chapdelaine.
The Alouettes also have missed the playoffs in four years, and it doesn’t look hopeful to end that drought this season with Sherman getting fired before the season begins.
With the CFL now signing off on such decisions and ownership interest in transition or being non-existent, we should be more worried about the Alouettes’ future than finding another reason to make them a punchline.
