The funnel cloud advisories Environment Canada issued for most of central and southeastern Saskatchewan Saturday morning were lifted early Sunday.
The advisories stretched as far north as Prince Albert, through the Saskatoon, Yorkton and Regina areas, and as far southeast as Carlyle.
“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” Environment Canada wrote in its online weather advisory. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”
While landspoud tornadoes don’t usually cause significant damage, the weather office warned they can still be dangerous. The winds generated by these twisters can still be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.
