I would have to think that the International Olympic Committee should be humble, and not consider itself so elite, in the wake of announcing that the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be going to Italy.
It was November of 2018 when Calgary decided to pull out of the running for the event. City council, after hearing from constituents, decided that the price tag to host didn’t guarantee the proper return. When all was said and done, the IOC had two bids to consider: One from Italy and one from Sweden. The Italian bid won out.
While a recent IOC poll showed that 83 per cent of Italians supported hosting the Games, only 55 per cent of those polled in Sweden thought the country should put up a bid.
The IOC’s regulations on what amateur athletes can do in promotions and its exclusive use of images is also a hindrance. The International Olympic Committee may have to change its approach in the future to get bids, and help others increase profits from the event.
