A Saskatoon martial arts team walked away winners after a scary start to a world tournament in Germany.
The group of five competed in the 2016 World Organization of Martial Arts Athletes international games held in Munich last weekend.
They were having dinner near the German city when a shooter opened fire at a mall on July 22, killing nine people and injuring 36 others.
Crystal Greenwood is a member of the Okami Martial Arts team and sent a message to News Talk Radio the day after the attack.
“It is extremely scary. Fire trucks and ambulances were rushing out from Landshut for hours last night after the attack,” she said.
Greenwood said Landshut is about 30 minutes away from Munich, a city of more than 1.3 million people.
The competition went ahead as scheduled for the rest of the weekend, and the mighty five from Saskatoon walked away champions.
They earned eight gold medals, a silver and three bronze, plus a world title belt in continuous sparring.
“Some (of us) have gone home to Canada; a few are touring Munich and Amsterdam,” Greenwood messaged Wednesday night. “Currently we are in Salzburg, Austria enjoying our family holiday.”
The Saskatoon group was part of a larger team Canada, which included athletes from British Columbia and Alberta.
