The Stanley Cup is coming to Saskatchewan.
Again.
We don’t like to brag in this province, but the Stanley Cup makes a lot of visits to Saskatchewan. It’s going to be at the Legislature on Saturday and, through the next few days, Hockey’s Holy Grail is visiting three members of the Cup-winning St. Louis Blues: Tyler Bozak, Jaden Schwartz and Brayden Schenn. They’re Saskatchewan guys, typically proud of their roots. And if you pay attention, most NHL champions have some Saskatchewan content.
Last year’s winners, the Washington Capitals, featured Saskatchewan players Chandler Stephenson and Braden Holtby and assistant general manager Ross Mahoney also brought the trophy through Regina, his hometown.
Saskatchewan contributes more players per capita to NHL rosters than any other jurisdiction. About 40 players each season are sprinkled throughout the league, a remarkable number for a province of just more than a million people. It seems like everyone in Saskatchewan knows, or is related to, an NHLer. So when they win a Stanley Cup, we all feel proud when they bring it home.
