During Riders training camp, I was asked what the West Division standings would look like at the end of the 2019 regular season.
I picked Calgary to finish on top because of a returning quarterback and a returning coach. The Stamps are also the defending Grey Cup champions which doesn’t hurt. Based on that returning quarterback, returning coach philosophy, I chose the Bombers to finish second. I picked Edmonton for a third-place finish based on the free-agent signing of Trevor Harris, who is a Grey Cup champion. I chose the Lions as the crossover team, with the Riders settling for fifth.
If asked now, I would pick Saskatchewan to be the fourth-place team in the division, while B.C. would be last.
The Lions do have a Grey Cup-champion quarterback on their offence, but not much else. Too many penalties and terrible pass protection led to a 27-point home field loss. Saskatchewan needs to take advantage of a vulnerable Lions team a week from Saturday.
