Cody Fajardo may be the guy. You know, The Guy. The quarterback the Saskatchewan Roughriders have been looking for since Darian Durant started falling apart five years ago.
The list of candidates has been plentiful, including the pitiful (Tino Sunseri), the pretty good (Kevin Glenn) and the where-are-they-nows (Keith Price and Mitchell Gale).
Fajardo isn’t home-grown, meaning he wasn’t recruited and developed by the Roughriders. He played in Toronto and B.C. before joining Saskatchewan in the off-season as a backup to oft-injured starter Zach Collaros.
With Collaros sidelined and facing an uncertain future because of a concussion, Fajardo started his fourth game Saturday against the B.C. Lions. Fajardo was coming off a poor performance and everyone was wondering how he would respond.
Give him an A! Or at least a B-plus. Fajardo played fearlessly, running effectively when required and missing very few receivers when throwing the football. Saskatchewan beat B.C. 38-25. Although defensive end Charleston Hughes and receiver Shaq Evans were the game stars, the Roughriders wouldn’t have won without a bounce-back performance from Fajardo, who proved emphatically he can be The Guy.
