Distracted driving continues to be an issue in Saskatchewan, according to numbers recently released by SGI.
During last month’s traffic safety spotlight, SGI says 919 people were caught driving distracted — 798 (87 per cent) of them were using their cell phones at the time. While not the highest number ever recorded, the insurance company says it’s in the top margin.
The fine for driving distracted is $280, plus four demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition program.
If a driver is caught with their cellphone twice in the same year, their vehicle will be towed and impounded for a week.
Last month, Saskatchewan police also reported the following offences:
- 7,040 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving
- 367 impaired driving offences, including 325 Criminal Code charges
- 590 tickets regarding seatbelts/car seats
Saskatchewan police’s July Traffic Safety Spotlight is construction zones. Together with SGI, police are reminding drivers to be patient, alert and to watch out for the signs in orange zones this summer.
