If you are having any issues with maple bugs, the City of Regina wants you to know that you do have options.
Russell Eirich is the manager of pest control and says residents have a number of tools available to them.
“Generally speaking … they like to congregate when it’s cooler in the day, so you can sweep them up, put them in and bag … throw them in the garbage.”
Eirich said people who are seeing the bugs invade their houses or yards can also use pesticides to deal with them, or suck them up with a shop vacuum.
Shawn Sherwood with Poulin’s Pest Control in Regina said using a shop vacuum is the best option.
“The shop vac is really, really effective.”
Not only does it get rid of the maple bugs, but he says it’s also the quickest way to kill them.
“You can kill them really quickly with insecticides but … you’ve got to spray them directly … then you’ve got death in 20 minutes. If you suck them up with a shop vac you’ve got death in seconds.”
Sherwood said powders can also be an effective method.
“Powders work reasonably well … the advantage to powders is that these guys like to spend their evenings down in cracks and crevasses alongside your foundation.”
Sherwood said these spaces are some of the easiest places to put poisons, but he said people need to be careful when using them.
“You need to be very careful where you put them because you don’t want … children and pets to get into them.”
Sherwood said people living in older areas of the city are more likely to have problems with the bugs than those in newer parts of the city.
“They like to spend their time in established treed areas, so that usually means the old sections of town that have been around for 30, 40 years, where you’ve got … large trees.”
