An injured dog at the centre of a call to Regina police has found a new home with one of the officers who responded.
Early Saturday morning, police were called to the area of 15th Avenue and Toronto Street, for a complaint of an injured and abandoned dog. Officers found the dog awake and alert, but refusing to move.
Officers and the Regina Humane Society took the dog to a 24-hour veterinary clinic, where she was found to have a badly broken foot. Police believe the dog, nicknamed “Sweetie Bear”, fell from a second story window.
The dog spent some time at the Humane Society recovering.
The officers fundraised to cover Sweetie Bear’s vet bills and time at the Humane Society.
Police said the dog’s previous owner did not want her back, but there is a happy ending to this story.
One of the officers who was at the scene of the original call has adopted Sweetie Bear, renaming her “Akela” which means “lucky” in Hawaiian. Police said the dog has already adjusted to her new home.
