Regina Humane Society seizes 79 felines in possible animal hoarding case

The Regina Humane Society is putting out the call for adoptions, after its animal protection officers seized 79 cats and kittens from a home in the city in a potential animal hoarding case.

In an emailed media release, the society said the owner of the felines surrendered them to the animal protection officers.

“The pets were found living among garbage, feces and urine and without proper access to food and water,” the release said.

“Our first priority was to provide emergent care such as food and water and treating any animals in immediate distress, followed by a general health assessment of each animal,” veterinary care director Dr. Katherine Ball said.

The release didn’t state a date or location of when or where the home owner allegedly hoarded the cats, or if any of them died or had to be euthanized.

“Details relating to any charges under the Animal Protection Act of Saskatchewan will not be released as the case is still under investigation,” the release said.

The Humane Society now wants people to help out by adopting some of the cats.

The sudden surge of felines at its facility is straining “the resources and finances of the Shelter. With so many felines together, maintaining the health of each animal also becomes a concern and a considerable cost,” the Humane Society said.

Until Aug. 31, it’s waiving all adult cat adoptions costs; it’s lowering kitten adoption costs to $50.

An adoption will still incur a $20 City of Regina license fee for residents in the city.

The adopted felines will already have had spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, tattoo, microchip, complimentary veterinary exam and 30 days Petplan pet insurance completed.
