A good education requires more than just pencils and books.
Regina blogger Holly Horvath was once a teacher herself and remembers paying out of pocket for school supplies.
That’s why she’s crowdfunding to help teachers keep their classrooms stocked. Her campaign is called #clearthelists.
“It’s a campaign that started in Texas to help teachers … fill their classrooms with supplies and stuff for kids that they need that often fall as a financial expense for the teacher,” Horvath said Monday during The Greg Morgan Morning Show.
While the need for assistance in Canada might not be as great as it is in other countries, Horvath said teachers want to put in the extra effort for their students.
“(That will help) if you want to go above and beyond and create that warm and welcoming environment and just even make your day as a teacher easier and the students’ educational experience better,” Horvath said.
As of Monday, Horvath has raised more than $5,700 on her GoFundMe page.
She’s asking teachers to create Amazon wishlists under $300.
“Teachers are putting on books, math manipulatives (and) flexible seating like rockers or beanbag chairs. I’m trying to find teachers and classrooms that need it the most,” she said.
Teachers can add to the list by adding a comment to a post on Horvath’s Instagram page.
