With a fan base as intense as the one here in Saskatchewan, I wasn’t surprised at the reaction within these borders to the news that Winnipeg Blue Bombers tailback Andrew Harris will serve a two-game suspension for violating the CFL-CFL Players’ Association substance-abuse policy.
The Bombers will not have their starting quarterback nor their all-star running back for back-to-back games against Saskatchewan. Yes, that could be a great equalizer for the 6-3 Riders against 8-2 Winnipeg. But as I take a step back, it’s always a black eye on any league and any sport when a player is accused of, or has been found guilty of, using performance-enhancing drugs.
Andrew Harris is a Canadian star in the Canadian Football League who now has his name associated with cheating to some fans. So yes, the Bombers face distractions that may benefit Saskatchewan on Sunday and on Sept. 7, but this development is a negative for the CFL and every player in this league.
