A Regina Police Service officer facing two assault charges pleaded guilty to one of them Monday.
But Cpl. Colin Magee has decided to go to trial on the second charge.
Sentencing on the first charge was adjourned to Oct. 21 in Regina Provincial Court. A trial date for the second charge has been set for Dec. 18, according to Global News.
Magee was on duty when the alleged assaults against a man and a male youth occurred in September. The 17-year member of the RPS was charged following an investigation into alleged assaults that occurred Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 in the detention area of the RPS headquarters.
In a media release, the Regina Police Service said Monday’s plea was part of the process that was laid out by Chief Evan Bray when he met the media in April to discuss the charges against Magee.
“Chief Bray said once the criminal matters are dealt with, then we will complete our administrative investigation – The Police Act matters – before there are any final decisions made,” the media release read.
“The Public Complaints Commission will be part of the administrative process, as well as our Police Service. But, as stated, this is a step in the process; not the conclusion yet. At this time, Cpl. Magee is performing administrative duties within the building, with no contact with members of the public.”
