The University of Saskatchewan is getting a big boost from the federal government.
Liberal Minister Ralph Goodale was on campus Tuesday to announce the university would be receiving a $77.4 million grant to go towards water security research. The funding comes through the Canadian First Research Excellence Fund, which is providing $900 million to post-secondary projects nation-wide this fall.
The U of S will be focusing on water-related issues, including the quality of drinking water in First Nations and Metis communities. They’ll also look into “water threats,” and how government and industry can reduce consumption.
This is the second-straight year the university will be receiving funding through CFREF, making it the first institution to receive back-to-back grants. The government organization decides funding through an academic grant application competition.
University officials say the financial support makes the water security project the most funded worldwide.
