The City of Regina announced Thursday that it’s going to offer free transit for people who want to get to polling stations during Monday’s federal election.
It’s a reversal for the city, which initially said it wouldn’t be providing free transit on election day. In a media release, the city said the change was made after residents made inquiries about the service.
“It’s important for residents to get out and vote,” Kim Onrait, the city’s executive director of citizen services, said in the release. “We want everyone to have an opportunity to get to their polling stations and have their say in this federal election and we hope free bus service will help.”
According to the release, a pass for free transit can be downloaded at regina.ca. Riders can print off the passes or show them on their phones to bus drivers.
The passes will work on regular transit routes as well as on paratransit routes.
