8:30 – Hooray, hooray, today’s election day! During the campaign we reached out to the leaders of every major party and offer them a chance to join our show. We’ve already spoken to Elizabeth May and Maxime Bernier, while Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh have declined our offers. Today we’ll catch up with the last of the five major parties as CPC Leader Andrew Scheer joins the show.
LIVE: Andrew Scheer, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and incumbent MP for Regina-Qu’Appelle.
9:00 – The Hour of the Big Stories… Open Session
10:00 – The last polls released during this election were all pointing to the strong likelihood of a minority government scenario, with the Conservatives and Liberals separated by just one or two points. To discuss the most likely scenarios for a minority government, and how Western Canada may react if the Liberals are re-elected, John is joined by political science Professor Duane Bratt, of Mount Royal University.
LIVE: Duane Bratt, Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at Mount Royal University.
11:00 – Canadian journalist Meghan Murphy, who’s known for founding Feminist Current, is booked to speak at the Toronto Public Library Oct. 29, giving a talk entitled “Gender Identity: What Does it Mean for Society, the Law, and Women?” While it may seem unsurprising that a feminist would give a talk on gender at a public library, Murphy’s previous comments have resulted in her being labeled transphobic, and her talk has raised the ire of Toronto Pride, the city’s mayor, and an endless parade of Twitter and social media commentators. Despite calls to cancel the event, Toronto’s head librarian Vicky Bowles stood up for free speech and refused to silence Murphy, saying “engaging in respectful civil discourse with people of opposing views may be a more productive strategy than abstaining from public library events.” Murphy joins Gormley now to discuss the event, the controversy surrounding it, and her views on gender identity.
LIVE: Meghan Murphy, Canadian writer, journalist, and founder of Feminist Current.
12:00 – This month, Saskatchewan author Deana Driver published “Flight: Stories of Canadian Aviation, Vol. 1,” collecting 22 stories from the skies above Canada describing engine failure, smokejumping, wartime bombings, the Snowbirds, and more. Driver, who has authored five previous non-fiction books and contributed to many others, joins John now to discuss her latest project and share some of the intriguing stories of aviation in Canada.
