Province investigates high copper, lead levels in Sask Hospital water

Less than nine months after the facility opened, the Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford (SHNB) has uncovered more problems with its facility.

“Recent water testing at SHNB has shown signs of irregularities and inconsistency that indicate levels of copper or lead may be higher than desirable,” the Ministry of Central Services said in a statement provided to 650 CKOM.

“There is no immediate health risk, and no health advisory has been issued,” the statement continued.

The ministry said it’s taking an abundance of caution for the health of patients and staff, including making potable water available at the facility.

“A full investigation and further water testing is occurring at the site to remediate any issues that may be identified. This is a priority and every effort is being made to minimize the amount of time this situation impacts patients and staff,” the ministry’s statement read.

In May, the province revealed the facility would need to go under significant repair work for a leaky roof. The modular roofing panels installed had shrunk, causing issues with the spring melt.
