The upcoming Saturday night will be different than other fall, winter and spring Saturday nights. After 38 years, Don Cherry will no longer be on Hockey Night in Canada.
Vin Scully, who set the gold standard in North American sports broadcasting, said something interesting a few years ago when asked about his upcoming retirement. He was the announcer for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1950 to 2016. That’s more than six decades of calling Dodgers baseball (minus one or two years while he did network football).
When asked if he understood how tough it would be for his employer to replace him, he said, “I saw Mel Allen leave the Yankees. I saw Harry Caray leave the Cubs. I saw Jack Buck leave the Cardinals, and you know what? (The teams) never missed a game. They kept on playing and the fans kept on going.”
That was the take from the industry’s best. Very few are as good as Vin.
In Canada, very few will have the impact of Don. However, no one person is bigger than the sport.
Saturday night hockey will live on.
