8:30 – The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation declared an impasse Thursday in its long-running contract negotiations with the Province. The teachers’ union is working towards a collective agreement that increases salaries and includes stipulations on class sizes and compositions. While the Ministry of Education has created a committee to study class size and composition, the STF has refused to participate, calling the committee an attempt to undermine the bargaining process. When it comes to salary increases, the union wants to see an increase of two per cent the first year, and three per cent over the next two years. STF President Patrick Maze joins Gormley to discuss their frustrations during the bargaining process, and why they won’t join the provincial committee to study class sizes.

11:30 – Former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy was in Saskatchewan this week to help launch a new training program for school staff, which focuses on bullying and abuse. Kennedy, who was abused as a youth by hockey coach and sex offender Graham James, says he was failing out of school yet nobody asked questions to find out what was really happening in his life. The program, called “Respect in Schools,” is available to all teachers and school staff in the province, though it’s not mandatory. Kennedy joins Gormley to discuss the program and why it’s so important for teachers to recognize bullying and abuse when it happens to students.
