A historic Saskatchewan newspaper is on sale for only $1 and a 500-word essay.
It’s called the Win Your Own Publication Contest.
Tara de Ryk owns the Davidson Leader. She’s looking for someone passionate about local news to be her successor, and she thinks an essay contest is the best way to prove it.
“(I’m looking for) someone who can show me they understand (how important it is) to be a part of the community,” de Ryk told Gormley.
The paper is more than 115 years old. As such, de Ryk thinks it’s important to preserve it. She couldn’t find a buyer at an industry-standard price, and thought of selling it cheaply as the best solution.
“When I purchased the paper, I thought ‘I’m just a custodian of it, a caretaker,’ ” she said. “I want to see it carry on and continue.”
She feels she has reached a point in her life where she’s ready to move on.
“I’m just ready to retire,” de Ryk said.
People in the towns of Davidson, Craik, Kenaston and Hanley and the surrounding rural areas might be familiar with the publication. The Leader has more than 1,200 subscriptions in the area.
