Two firefighters from Saskatchewan are heading to Australia to help battle wildfires in that country.
The firefighters are part of a 21-person group known as the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) team, which is en route to New South Wales. The team is to spend 38 days in Australia, filling operational, planning and aviation jobs.
It’s a response to the National Resource Sharing Centre in Melbourne asking for help from Canadian wildfire agencies to fight bushfires along Australia’s east coast.
According to media reports, more than 7,000 wildfires have burned two million hectares of land in New South Wales since July. Six people have died and 673 homes have been destroyed.
It’s the first time Canadian firefighters have been sent to Australia under the Exchange of Wildland Fire Management Resources agreement. Australian firefighters have come to Canada four times since 2015.
Canadian wildfire agencies regularly send firefighters and resources to other jurisdictions through resource-sharing agreements.
