I do and always will defend the Canadian Football League to Canadians who continue to demonstrate a loud yet uneducated view that the CFL is vastly inferior to the NFL. It’s not.
Having said that, there is no way to put a positive spin on what is going on in Montreal. On Wednesday, TSN reported that the Alouettes have suspended the general manager’s search because of the ownership search. The Canadian-born Lenkov brothers, based in California, are no longer interested in purchasing the team, according to reports.
Earlier this month, Montreal Gazette reporter Herb Zurkowsky wrote the Wetenhall family may put some money back into the team, even though the Wetenhalls sold it in May. The report suggested another investment in the team wouldn’t be as large as the previous commitment.
There have also been reports that at least one person who interviewed for the GM job said there are too many red flags with the ownership situation in flux.
From a distance, the ownership situation in Montreal appears to be closer to a crisis than something that is nearing closure.
