The cold weather in Regina this week has kept crews from Reliance Mackenzie Plumbing and Heating working around the clock.
For residents who want to avoid making an emergency call, Darren MacDonald from the company recommends preventative maintenance.
His biggest piece of advice is to get your furnace inspected.
“The easiest way to make sure that your heating doesn’t break down when you’re gone or when you’re at work is to have a professional check it out,” MacDonald told the Greg Morgan Morning Show.
“Make sure the filters are checked, cleaned and that the unit is working at its most efficient.”
These days, homeowners are running their furnaces hard so it’s important to change the filters.
“Usually it’s about every three months but when your furnace is working at maximum capacity, you definitely want to have it checked out at least every month just to make sure,” MacDonald said.
Another piece of advice is keeping the thermostat at a consistent temperature when it’s cold outside.
“It doesn’t give your furnace a time for it to cool down and then start back up again. That’s usually when you’re going to find that things are going to happen with the furnace,” he said.
