The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF), along with SGI, is encouraging drivers to be careful when traveling on the province’s roads and highways.
There has been a large increase in the amount of collisions involving animals so far this year.
As of the end of August, the number of claims submitted for collisions involving moose and deer have gone up by over 1,100. The largest increase is with deer at 1096 more claims.
SGI has paid out over $35.2 million in damages for both species already, and the worst three months of the year (October, November, and December) are not yet complete.
The SWF, with financial help from SGI, is engaging in a public safety campaign to encourage drivers to be more aware of wildlife, especially moose and deer, crossing the roads.
The campaign is called Moose on the Loose. Advertisements on highway billboards, in radio and TV PSA’s, on posters and restaurant placemats at SWF dinner functions, reminds motorists to slow down during peak wildlife movement times and to generally be more aware of the potential of an animal dashing out in front of their vehicle.
