It was two different stories for the Huskies men’s and women’s hockey teams in a two-game set against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
The women took both games of a doubleheader in Alberta, winning 4-2 on Friday and 2-0 Saturday.
Courtney Cormack, Kaitlin Willoughby, Kori Herner and Shyan Elias had the goals on Friday. Rachel Johnson and Lauren Zary scored on Saturday. Jasey Rae Book and Cassidy Hendricks picked up the wins in goal as Saskatchewan out shot Lethbridge 80-39.
The U of S men’s team was up against a much stiffer competition, escaping with a 3-2 overtime win Friday before a 5-3 come from behind loss on Saturday.
Jesse Forsberg led the way on Friday, scoring once in regulation to go with the overtime winner. Michael Sofillas added a single while Jordan Cooke made 33 saves, including 16 in the first period.
On Saturday the Huskies had the jump and took a 3-1 lead into the midway mark of the third period. All of a sudden the Lethbridge offense hit their stride, scoring twice in an eight-second period to tie the game at 3-3. Sam McKechnie banged in the winner with less than four minutes remaining before an empty-netter sealed the deal.
Wyatt Johnson, Michael Sofillas and Josh Roach had the goals for the Huskies while Jordan Cooke made 28 saves in the loss.
Up next for the Huskies is a two-game set against the rival Regina Rams in a home and home. The men are on the road Friday and home Saturday while the women host Regina Friday at Rutherford rink before heading on the road Saturday. Both home games start at 7 p.m.
