Starting Friday, the Archdiocese of Regina will be taking steps to protect residents from the potential spread of COVID-19.
In an email to parishioners Wednesday, Archbishop Don Bolen announced that Sunday and weekday masses are to be suspended until further notice.
Bolen and other clergy will hold daily and Sunday masses at Resurrection Parish in Regina and those will be livestreamed. The Chrism mass on March 30 also is to be livestreamed.
The Government of Saskatchewan has put limits on the size of gatherings in hopes of keeping the virus from spreading through the province. In light of that edict, the archbishop asked that baptisms, funerals and weddings be limited in size to immediate family only.
He added that “larger celebrations should take place at a later date when all restrictions have been lifted.” For funerals, Bolen suggested a graveside service with a memorial mass at a later date.
“Pastors are encouraged to arrange for private confessions ensuring all health and safety guidelines are followed,” he added.
Church councils can hold meetings, but they have to adhere to the government’s restrictions and to health guidelines. Bolen recommended that such meetings be held electronically if possible.
The archbishop noted that churches can remain open to the public for private prayer, but at the discretion of pastors or administrators.
For more information, Bolen advised parishioners to visit the archdiocese’s website.
