After a bit of a scramble to leave Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and get home to Regina, former 980 CJME news anchor Alex Docking and his wife Jill are now back home and self-isolating.
So far they’re free of COVID-19 symptoms, and a little bit restless over being cooped up indoors; they’re only into Day 3 of the mandatory two-week period ordered by the provincial government.
“It’s funny. You know you never think, ‘If only I can go to a grocery store.’ And then suddenly you can’t go out to get any groceries and we’ve been away for three months. I just want to go to a grocery store,” Docking said with a laugh while speaking with Greg Morgan.
Alex and Jill usually spend months at a time in Mexico to escape the cold Regina winters.
That all changed as COVID-19 began spreading across the U.S. and Canada.
“We got home Sunday about midnight, so this will be entering the third day of being locked in our Lakeview hovel,” he said.
The couple cleared customs through Vancouver. That’s when Canada Border Services Agency officers were persistent in ensuring they had the latest info.
“Of course they’re asking you about seven or eight times, ‘Any symptoms? Any problems? Do you know you have to go straight home?’ ” Docking said.
Following a public health order from the province, they went straight home.
Despite the need to get out, Docking said having friendly neighbourhood businesses to count on has been helpful.
“We’ve been dealing with Lakeview Fine Foods who are sending us a nice basket of food,” Docking said. “We were able to order our food online from them. We’ve got Hill Avenue Drugs just in the neighbourhood as well. We’ve got some prescriptions refilled for us as well.
“It’s great having those neighbourhood businesses to access easily.”
