One person has been arrested after a vehicle rammed into the playground at St. Mary’s School on Thursday.
In a release, Battleford RCMP said officers were called to the elementary school at approximately 2 a.m., and located a vehicle with extensive damage on the scene. No one was in or around the vehicle at the time, although there was evidence that someone had been hurt.
The RCMP went to the address of the registered owner and found people suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. One person was arrested at the home, but the investigation is ongoing, so further arrests and charges are pending, police say.
Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Jordan Kist, the chief financial officer for Light of Christ Catholic Schools, said his organization is thankful students and staff weren’t on site in this case.
“We’re going to get the site cleaned up as soon as possible with the intent of repairing or replacing where we can,” Kist said.
The repairs to the playground are expected to cost several thousand dollars, but at this time, an exact estimate is unavailable.
