Saskatchewan campgrounds will be allowed to open this summer, but campers will have to deal with many restrictions to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Online reservations for sites began Monday. They also opened to single-day visits for activities like hiking and fishing. Overnight camping is to start June 1.
Robin Campese, the executive director of visitor experiences with Saskatchewan Provincial Parks, joined The Brent Loucks Show to break down the rules you need to know when heading out to the campsite.
“One of the biggest things to note is that we are restricted only to Saskatchewan residents this year,” she explained.
Recreational areas like beaches, swimming pools, picnic areas and playgrounds will be closed. Food and beverage vendors won’t be available, and neither will showers and laundry.
Washrooms will be open, but only to one family at a time.
Campgrounds are only allowed to book up to half of their capacity in order to ensure social distancing between campers.
Cleaning and social distancing will also be enforced in all public areas.
While Campese acknowledges it will be a challenge to stick to all of the rules, she’s optimistic people will be able to enjoy the outdoors while staying safe.
“I hope that people will mind their own safety and that of others,” she said. “Just be respectful of that six-feet distance we need to keep between households and groups.”
The entire list of regulations can be found on the Government of Saskatchewan website.
