The thefts of a dozen bronze plaques around the city have prompted the Regina Police Service to ask for the public’s help.
According to police, 12 commemorative plaques have been reported stolen from parks, churches and heritage sites around Regina. Investigators believe the thieves may be stealing the plaques for their scrap metal value.
The first theft occurred in mid- to late February, when a bronze plaque was taken from the 2400 block of Elphinstone Street. Since then, the thefts of other plaques have been reported in south and south-central areas of Regina.
“Investigators believe thieves are taking advantage of the fact that people are not able to congregate in any location, including parks, churches and heritage sites (due to COVID-19 restrictions),” police said in a media release. “The theft of these plaques may go unnoticed for days before they are reported to police.”
Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
