The RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina may be closed, but it’s joining in on showing appreciation for essential workers during the pandemic.
On Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the centre will be handing out a bag full of heart magnets to those who come to its parking lot in west Regina.
“They can paint it any colour they want (or) write motivational messages so that when they go out the community — whether it’s a family member, or just a store clerk that they see, or a gas attendant — they can show their appreciation for them and give them a heart for the heroes that we have working,” said Justin Williams, educator, public programs and social media at the heritage centre.
Williams said an anonymous donation funded the project.
Staff will be set up with a tent in the parking lot and are hoping as many people as possible come.
The centre’s mascot will be there to promote social distancing and eliminate person-to-person contact. And the centre’s newest recruit, Indi the police dog, will be there as well.
“She’ll be there also to kind of lift people’s spirits and deliver hearts as best as she can,” joked Williams.
Williams said organizers came up with the idea just because they wanted to help out the community in this trying time.
“We want to just show our appreciation for all the people who continue to work and we want the community to be able to show that appreciation as well,” he said.
