The NHL has come up with a preemptive strike when it comes to balloting for the 2017 NHL 3 on 3 all-star tournament.
Fans can vote for one player per division to be a team captain; however, eligible players must be on a NHL roster as of Nov. 1 and cannot be sent to the American Hockey League by Jan. 26.
This is to prevent a situation like last year, when enforcer John Scott was named a captain.
Scott was playing in the AHL at the time, and only played in 12 NHL games last season.
By no means was I offended by the John Scott story of last year. Under the exterior of an NHL enforcer, we got to meet a terrific person who literally received his 15 minutes of fame.
However, many hockey fans did abuse all-star voting privileges to a certain extent.
The NHL deserves credit for ensuring the integrity of an all-star event, while still giving fans the opportunity to be interactive.
