Last year, it was Connor McDavid. This year, it was the man picked behind McDavid in the 2015 NHL draft, Jack Eichel.
Eichel spoke out on the current situation in Buffalo. The Sabres haven’t made the playoffs since 2011 and for the last five — since he came into the league — Eichel has barely been able to smell the post-season.
Now that the Sabres’ season is officially over, Eichel and crew could be staring at an eight-month off-season due to COVID-19.
And just like McDavid last year, Eichel is using his stature as the face of the franchise to send a clear message to management that enough is enough.
Eichel’s Sabres were one win short of making the NHL’s 24-team playoff format, likely adding to the frustration. But they shouldn’t be here — not when they’re fronted with a talent like Eichel.
While Edmonton’s season has McDavid much more pleased with the direction of the Oilers, Eichel will likely need a similar season next year, or else the Sabres may face losing their face of the franchise.
