As the 150th anniversary of Confederation approaches, the Liberal government has announced a number of events and projects that will take place throughout Saskatchewan to mark the occasion.
Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, on behalf of the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, made a speech at the MacKenzie Art Gallery Friday.
“A wide range of activities will engage and educate and entertain us,” explained Goodale, who announced 19 different events and community projects for the province.
The federal government will provide over $2.7 million through the Canada 150 Fund, which is designed to help Canadians across the country take part in local, regional and national celebrations for the 150th anniversary. The funds will be split accordingly.
The government’s vision for these projects includes four major themes: diversity and inclusion, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, the environment and young people.
In a news release, Joly stated “the celebrations that will mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation will help us leave a legacy for future generations, strengthen the bonds that unite us, and look forward to the future with optimism.”
The celebrations will begin on Dec. 31, 2016.
“Together we are going to make 2017 a wonderful year to remember,” stated Goodale as he ended his speech.
