A provincial politician is going public with his personal health.
Saskatoon Meewasin MLA Roger Parent has recently been diagnosed with cancer.
In a statement Tuesday, the province said the diagnosis was unexpected.
“Mr. Parent sought medical attention after feeling unwell, and tests revealed the cancer is widespread,” it read.
“Roger’s wife, Sheila, their family and friends, would appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this time.”
Parent was first elected to the Saskatchewan legislature in the 2011 provincial election.
He served in a variety of capacities including on the Standing Committee for Human Services, the Standing Committee for Private Bills and the Special Committee on Traffic Safety.
Parent was involved in several community initiatives prior to his election, including the Saskatoon Homelessness Initiative Partnership, SREDA Aboriginal Economic Development Committee, Saskatchewan Committee on Aboriginal Procurement and Métis Nation – Saskatchewan.
