Saskatchewan reported 18 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, says this is a reminder that the virus is still here and we shouldn’t be letting our guard down.
Shahab said as the province continues to reopen, it’s even more important than ever to continue physical distancing, hand washing and not touching our faces.
“As important, if not more important because we are going to be engaging in many things that we didn’t in March or April. As we re-engage, we need to maintain that discipline that will allow us to enjoy our glorious Saskatchewan summers.”
Shahab told Gormley that with more people engaging with each other over the summer months it is likely that we will see some clusters in the weeks ahead, but at this time there is no plan to go into another lockdown. However, that could change if there is a large spike in cases.
“As long as we can keep them flat, that will allow us to continue without closing a lot of sectors down, but we can’t do that if cases keep climbing up. There would be a risk of a huge second wave. We’d have to carefully consider what should remain open and what should close,” said Shahab.
“The biggest question is going to be private gatherings and crowds. Private gatherings in public places, that’s where we see these so called super spreader events linked to mass gatherings. That’s what to watch for.”
Shahab also says that people should not feel guilty if they don’t want to attend large family gatherings due to concerns about the virus.
“There’s a lot of delayed events and celebrations that will be happening. Parties, maybe weddings, all of us need to think about ourselves and the health of people we love,” said Shahab. “There’s always a lot of social pressure to go to this event or that event. You should not go if you feel uncertain or that your health may put you at greater risk and your friends and family should understand.”
