Sask. Environmental Society calls for tougher pipeline regulations

A call to action from the Saskatchewan Environmental Society is hoping to prevent the Husky Oil spill from happening again.

The SES released a list of thirteen recommendations for stronger pipeline regulations in the province.

“Think about what happened it was an unfortunate event that could have been much worse,” said SES president Bert Weichel.

Of the items listed is greater transparency in spill reporting, independent investigations into spills and the use of the latest technology for spill detection and prevention.

“We also ask that Husky upgrade the safety features on its pipelines at all significant water body crossings,” said board member Peter Prebble.

The Province recently introduced new legislation dealing with moving oil by pipeline. But the SES wants to see more to prevent future spills.

“We have lost some confidence and we think it is timely that we lay out recommendations we hope the province will consider and integrate.”

The SES submitted its recommendations to the Saskatchewan Ministers of Environment, Economy and Energy and Resources.
