Live theatres in Saskatchewan were among the establishments that were permitted to reopen from the COVID-19 lockdown on June 29.
Regina’s Globe Theatre, however, decided to play it safe in the time of the novel coronavirus.
The theatre announced on its website that it plans to begin a schedule of three plays on its main stage in January.
“We are taking great care and consideration in scheduling a season that will be safe for our patrons, artists and staff,” the statement said. “We want to ensure that your health is our top priority and that we are planning responsibly.
“So, it is with an abundance of caution that Globe Theatre has decided to push back the start date and shorten the Main Stage season.”
The Globe noted the shows’ titles and the venues for the plays are to be announced in the fall.
In March, the Globe Theatre cancelled shows on its schedule due to the pandemic.
On June 23, the provincial government announced updates to its Re-Open Saskatchewan plan that allowed live theatres to resume performances a week later.
Instead, the Globe opted to hold off — and now with its hiatus lasting into January, it plans to move up the start date for the Prince Edward Building renewal project.
The theatre hopes to begin construction in the fall and, when the shows start in January, they’ll be staged in other venues around the city.
