Saskatoon paramedics were extremely busy last week dealing with a record number of overdose calls.
In a media release, Medavie Health Services says it responded to 94 overdose calls.
It also reported its busiest week of the year, responding to 815 emergency calls.
The release says overdose calls have been steadily increasing since March, as well as the administration of Narcan to patients.
In 2019, paramedics administered Narcan to 11 patients in May and 13 patients in June.
In 2020, Narcan was administered to 41 patients in May, and 49 patients in June.
“Since March we have seen a steady increase in overdose calls, and an increase in patients who require Narcan,” Troy Davies, Medavie’s director of public affairs, said in the release.
“We did anticipate a slight rise to these numbers due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the mental health effects it’s having on residents but the curve continues to rise. Responding to these calls daily, along with the new PPE requirements for Paramedics, has increased the stress levels for our staff.”
In total, Medavie responded to 1,319 calls from June 6 to June 13.
