A winter celebration reimagining a Canadian classic will hit the stage this week in Saskatoon.
The Nutana Winterlude Festival kicks off Thursday at W.E. Graham Park, behind École Victoria School on Broadway.
As part of the free three-day event, Sum Theatre will offer hourly performances of The Hockey Sweater. Additionally, the festival will feature sleigh rides, fire spinners and free hot chocolate from Calories, a nearby cafe located on Broadway Avenue.
“It’s a great day out with your family,” said Emma Thorpe, a local theatre artist involved with the festival.
Thorpe said The Hockey Sweater’s Canadian theme was such a success last year, they’re doing it all over again in 2016.
“It’s this lovely French Canadian, iconic Canadian short story about winter and hockey; having a place to find community. Hockey is such a big thing in Canada where you find your friends.”
The festival is put on by the Nutana Community Association. While entrance is free, the Sum Theatre cast is collecting donations to support the Deaf Crows, a Saskatchewan theatre group hoping to travel to Edmonton for the first-ever deaf theatre festival in Canada.
“We believe art is for everyone and we’re thrilled for the opportunity to support these artists,” said Heather Morrison, the artistic producer for Sum Theatre.
“We’ve received such wonderful support from Saskatoon, this is our chance to give back.”
The Festival runs Dec. 8-10, with performances of The Hockey Sweater taking place inside the gymnasium at École Victoria School.
