Moviegoers will have a new chance to catch a flick on the big screen in the great outdoors.
Drive-in movie nights will be taking place at three provincial parks on select weekends through the rest of summer.
Gene Makowsky, minister of parks, culture and sport said in a release Thursday the drive-in movie nights will allow campers and park visitors to enjoy some of the outdoor beauty Saskatchewan has to offer while spending time with loved ones and observing COVID-19 safety protocols.
“We have worked hard to ensure a fun, yet safe summer,” Makowsky said.
The first screening will take place in Moose Mountain Provincial Park on Friday and feature the film The Great Outdoors. The film will begin at 9:30 p.m.
Blackstrap Provincial Park and Buffalo Pound Provincial Park are also listed for movie showings later this summer.
Toy Story 4 will play in Blackstrap Provincial Park on Saturday, August 22. Two weeks later, on September 4, the same park will show Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Rounding out the summer lineup, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park will show the 2019 remake of The Lion King on Sept. 5. All three films are scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m.
In addition to entertaining Saskatchewan residents, the outdoor drive-ins will support local businesses.
In-park businesses like Kenosee Inn & Cabins, Kenosee Superslides and Club 19/Golf Kenosee will take part in giveaways before the events. Those who decide to visit the park prior to show time can receive a special rate at Master’s Mini Golf or meet with horses from the Kenosee Lake Riding Academy.
Satisfying moviegoers snack cravings, Allison’s Park Store will sell treats before and during the movie at a temporary outdoor concession stand.
Attendance is free for those with a valid park vehicle entry permit.
Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, the release said.
Staff with Sask. Parks will continue to offer enhanced cleaning and sanitization procedures for the event. Campers are asked to bring hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes and maintain social distance from others.
Those not feeling well or showing symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to stay home.
