Regina Transit has launched a four-month-long pilot project to see if on-demand bus service will work in the Queen City.
On Wednesday, Regina Transit said the service will be tried on Route 10 on the city’s west side. The service is to be available Monday to Friday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., between Aug. 31 and Dec. 31.
The pilot project will determine if the service will increase ridership and reduce wait times for passengers while also using fewer buses.
“On-demand service has been successful in other municipalities because it provides customers flexibility when they travel as opposed to a fixed time schedule,” Kim Onrait, the City of Regina’s executive director of citizen services, said in a media release.
“Other municipalities have seen an increase in ridership, and we are hoping for the same. If the pilot is a success, Regina Transit will look to expand use of the on-demand service to more parts of the city.”
During the pilot project, customers can ask to have a bus pick them up and drop them off at a stop of their choice along Route 10. Bookings can be made any time by using the “On Demand Transit: Rider App” (available on Google Play or the Apple App Store) or online.
Passengers also can make bookings from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., by calling 306-777-7725 up to two days in advance.
